In Suspension – Pastoral Letters for These Times #1 March 21, 2020

Grace and peace to you.

Grace and peace and worship and acts of compassion are never “canceled.” And even worship services are not completely “canceled” but during this Covid19 virus pandemic are suspended, that is temporarily canceled. We are grieved about the situation but that is cushioned by the thought that this situation will pass. Adding to the anxieties of this time is not knowing when public gathering for worship and social and economic activities around the world will resume. Also know that it is likely not all things will ever resume as they were a short time ago. Again however, take heart public worship gatherings will resume and you will be notified when we can!

A question pastors and our leadership is considering is how can we be the church, the people of God in worship and service of our Lord? Worship and service of God is never canceled but faces challenges and changes.

Bull Shoals Food Pantry, our Soup Sisters, and Flippin delivery ministries will continue with modified procedures but will continue not ‘cancel.’ This past week Secretary Elaine has been at work with several duties, at this moment that I am editing my letter to you and working on some devotional items it is a late Saturday afternoon. I brought in the mail item of the Entergy bill (not all businesses and services are closed and certainly their billing systems continue to be operational), and Tim has stopped in to continue doing the weekly janitorial needs. (Although I think I told him he could take the next week or weeks off!) The ‘church’ continues, please consider mailing financial offerings so we do not need a more major budget catch up campaign.

How can we at Christ by the Lake continue and modify our worship and ministries?

We are blessed with many in ‘the same boat’ yet able to offer much support for us to draw on. Many levels such as our ELCA Synod, online resources, and local ministerial sources offer helpful ideas.

I will try to navigate the learning curve for new tools that we can utilize here at Christ by the Lake. I hope at least for those with computers or smart phones to be able to join in for a worship time with images on or before Easter, April 12th!

Most immediately I am working on a couple of other things I can do and call upon your partnership as well. Ministries have been and always are to be in partnership.

I have captioned this email “In Suspension – Pastoral Letters for These Times” as I will be sending you more email letters throughout the weeks we are ‘in suspension.’ In this communication I hope to have a devotional as well as keeping you posted on Christ by the Lake Lutheran news.

I also will be going through cycles of calling every member of the congregation. If you have a particular situation of concern such as illness or surgery etc. please call me right away.

In addition to the devotional note in these pastoral emails I hope every Sunday at our usual worship time of about 10:30am to send you an email for worship use at home or elsewhere. Also, the April-June quarter of The Word in Season devotional is here. I have already delivered a few and I can deliver to your door or if you do not have a church key call if someone is at the church and you can come slip in to your church mail box while keeping ‘physical distance.’ You can from a physical distance please say hello to Elaine or I or whoever else is in the building. As best and comfortably as we can we want to keep in ‘social’ distance while respecting physical distance.

My ongoing prayers for you and God’s world community. God bless and keep you.

Pastor Sherman
